Pelle the Conqueror

After the death of his wife, Lasse Karlsson leaves Sweden with his 12-year-old son, Pelle, in search of a better life. In the late 19th century, the two emigrants arrive on the Danish island of Bornholm, where they hope to find farm work and earn enough money to continue on to the United States. Together, father and son face the uncertainty of starting over far from home.
