Ama and her mother, Grace, live a closed-off life inside their Glasgow apartment, relying on each other for everything. Grace is the only one who leaves, going out to work as a cleaner while forbidding Ama from stepping outside. As Ama nears adolescence and begins to long for more freedom, Grace is forced to confront the truth of the past she has tried to keep hidden.
