In post-war Rome, unemployed Antonio finally gets a chance to support his family when he is hired to hang posters across the city. The job depends on having a bicycle, but on his first day of work, it is stolen. With his livelihood suddenly at risk, Antonio sets out through the war-torn streets with his young son, searching for the thief and clinging to the hope of getting the bicycle back.
